Hello all, its that time of the week again. I will just warn you in advance, I'm not probably going to talk much about what happened this week (since it was a boring week for the most part), but more about what I learned!
First of all, the highlight of my week was definitely Saturday and Sunday! Saturday morning we went early to the Mission office/ Stake Center and were there for 3 baptisms!! 2 convert baptisms and 1 8 yr old boy. It was so incredible to be there and to feel of the spirit there! It was so strong! Also my first time seeing a baptism in person since I've been here - very exciting!
After that, we got to watch the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions of conference. President Eyring's granddaughter is one of the sisters that came into our mission this last transfer, so it was kinda funny to be sitting in the room with her watching her grandpa speak. It was interesting listening to conference with other people in mind. Throughout each of the talks, I heard things or thought about things that I would want to share with the people with whom we are currently working. So many good topics discussed! I usually find Elder Scott to be a bit boring, but I loved his talk this time on building a Christ-centered home. SO much good information in there and I thought it was fantastic. I also really liked Elder Bednar's on the law of Chastity. I think one of the things that I really liked about that one, was not just that it is a commandment of God, that we should keep it, but I love that by keeping that specific commandment, we can be confident. Confidence comes, in large part, from knowing that we are living a morally clean life. So great.
Also I like Elder Nelson's talk. In particular when he said that the reason the we (I) go on missions is to bless the lives of God's children everywhere, regardless of age, gender, race, or religious preference. Yes, we are here to bring people closer to Christ, that is a big part of what we do, but we are also here to "lift up the hands that hang down" - no matter who they are. We are all children of God and he loves EACH of his children! I also loved that he said that we teach people about the goodness of God. I loved that. That really is the basic message of our message. Loved it.
One of my favorite talks was President Uchtdorf (who doesn't love him?), both his talks, but particularly the one about light and darkness. Thats actually something that President Clark has been talking a lot about here with us, is focusing on light. I loved when Uchtdorf said that yes, there are hard times, and yes, we all have problems. We have the recognize the fact that there is darkness in the world, but not to dwell in it! " Darkness cannot succeed over the brilliant light of the son of God...in whom there is no darkness at all!" Our way to the light, in life is to follow Christ and be a true disciple of him. Part of the goodness of God is that he doesn't expect us to be perfect at once (like a toddler learning to walk as he mentioned in his priesthood talk). In order to come out of the darkness, we just have to take that first step of faith into the light. And there is no better place to start than where you are now. I absolutely loved everything about this talk.
This talk about faith leads me to you know who.. Elder Holland (who I got to see speak TWICE in the MTC:))! I don't even know where to start with this one. I loved everyword and every word was true. It was so perfect for one of our members who is kinda going inactive. I actually just recently read that story in the bible a few days ago and Elder Holland added a whole new perspective and deeper meaning to that story that I hadn't even thought about. SO good, I can't wait for next month's liahona to come out so I can read it again.
Elder Oaks was also fantastic - Jesus' teachings were not meant to be theoretical. They weren't just a bunch of really nice things that he said to sound impressive. His teachings truly are the things that we need to DO, not just think about. I liked that in relation to Elder Andereson's talk saying that we need to either choose between the following the traditions of our fathers, or follow Jesus Christ. The most common way that we are rejected his is with the excuse that the person is pravoslavnyi (Russian Orthodox) and they can't change that. They're Russian and they were born pravoslavnyi and are going to stay that way. That's great - we really do believe in freedom of religion for ALL peopl, but just because they are Russian is a very poor excuse. They are, in essence, choosing to follow their traditions, rather than Christ.
I guess I will last, of course mention President Monson's talk on obedience! So good - a topic that we as missionaries, always seem to be hearing about haha. Great talk though. And Elder Perry. Commandments. He basically said it all and had a very accurate analysis of the world's obedience when it comes to commandments. And he got a little passionate about it too! I loved seeing that from him. Great, great talk. Loved them all!! Wonderful conference!!
Interms of the rest of this week for me, It was boring. Not much happened. Elder Read got sick so we had to stay home for a little bit. So boring. Thus weekend was amazing though. Hopefully next week's email will be more exciting. We are actually in Peter right now, going to the center to see some stuff for P day so I'll be able to tell about that next week and hopefully send pictures!
Love you all, have a great week!
